Once you are in your last year or two of high school, its time for you to decide the college or university you want to apply to for further studies. It certainly is not an easy decision to make as you have to consider many things before you can take the final step. For some students this may be the most difficult task they can imagine because their choice will have a great impact on their lives as the years spent in college will shape their future. But it no reason for your to worry either. All you need to do is to carefully weigh your options based on the five factors that are given below. They will help you to make up your mind.

Try and consider the various areas of study carefully.
As a student, you will have to decide the occupation you wish to pursue in future. This will in a big way help you to make your decision. There are many colleges in the US that offer unique programs of study to students that happen to be outside mainstream areas of study. You may be opting for subjects such as Agriculture, Industrial engineering etc. These are a few examples of study courses that are not found in every college or university. It is natural for you to be undecided. Do not be in a rush. Take your time and try not to make this decision based on an area of study. It is seen that an average college fresher is likely to change their major almost 5 times before graduation.

You need to compare the tuition rates of different colleges.
You will have to consider the cost to attend college as that is important. You have to make a list of different colleges and see what courses they offer and what their tuition rates are. You may have to apply for educational loans or take financial assistance from home to study. Thus, you aim should be to identify the best college that offers the courses you wish to study at a reasonable price.

How much time it takes to commute?
This is also a factor that you may have to consider while choosing the college for yourself. Do you want to stay closer to home or would prefer to move far away. If your college is within the driving distance, then you can drive down to college and pursue your studies. Or else you may have to apply for hostel accommodation.

// ]]> Decide on a college where family and friends are studying.
It is always advantageous to join a college that family and friends already attend. You may feel a bit isolated in an unfamiliar environment. But if you have known faces around you it can give you the desired confidence. You will excel in your studies and spread your wings sooner than expected.

Visit the College Campus
If you visit the campus of your prospective colleges, it will help you to reach a better decision. You have to feel comfortable in the college environment where you wish to study. Facts and figures will not be able to give you enough information about a place. When you visit the college campus in person, you will see for yourself the campus life that exists there and that will help you to make up your mind. After you have considered these factors carefully, it will be easy for you to choose the right college to study. These study years are invaluable as it prepares you for the future. You will have to make sure that you are able to select the college that will help you to study the courses you want and make you realize your dreams.

Time has been flying by you for weeks and you realize that your big midterm is coming up in less than a week, how are you going to prepare? When it comes to studying, everyone has got a different approach. Some students have had their head in a book for weeks before, while others can skate by with cramming the night before. If you’re the average college student, you won’t need to dedicate an incredulous amount of time in the library to achieve a good grade on a test, (unless you’ve been skipping class and slacking off.) A lot of students elect to study by downing countless caffeinated beverages and pulling all nighters, which may be a quick fix for a test but it’s devastatingly unhealthy as I’ve come to learn and usually ends up with a lesser grade on the test than you could have scored. While everyone has their individual preferences, such as music vs. no music, coffee shop vs. library or home, there are a few strategies that everyone can benefit from.

Planning ahead is probably the biggest key to lessening the stress and amount of time you’ll have to spend in the books. Keep up on your course work and schedule hourly allotments of studying before the big test. This won’t leave you opening your book at 11:00 pm the night before your test.

Studying in groups or with a partner always helps out. We learn information better by teaching the material to someone else. It causes us to use the information in new ways and forms better memory circuits in the brain. This can also make studying more enjoyable than slaving away by yourself. Make sure to study with someone who is going to reciprocate the effort and not just goof off the whole time you hang out.

Review your material at night before you go to sleep. Studies have shown that we commit most of the information gathered throughout the day primarily during sleep, so reviewing before you hit the sack will give you an edge up on those flashcards you’ve been looking at all day. On top of that make sure to get plenty of sleep, at least 6-8 hours. It’s unhealthy for the brain to go without much needed sleep, and you perform worse under less sleep. Caffeine helps you relieve the feelings of grogginess but it doesn’t erase sleep deprivation and won’t help your brain perform at maximum capacity.

The study aides you choose can be powerful tools, so find out what works best for you. You can rewrite your notes or outline the book, make flashcards, read, or just review your old work. Always try and use the information you’ve learned in situations outside of the classroom. Reusing information given in lecture in new and novel ways helps you understand it better and commit the concepts to memory. Caffeine is great in moderate doses, as is chewing peppermint gum which will actually boost your cognitive focus, but no matter what testimonials your friends give you, stay away from ADD and ADHD medications because they are not only illegal to take but they are highly addictive and can cause serious complications.

Take it slow and divide your study load up into manageable bunches, be healthy, stay calm and your studying will prove to be productive and easy going instead of stressful and unsatisfying.

When I was a high school senior applying for colleges, choosing a major (field of study) seemed like the most intimidating decision I had to make in my short 18 years on this earth. I talked to counselors, parents, and friends and none of it seemed to make me rest easy. I thought that once I made the decision I would not only be trapped in that major for four years or more, but that I was also determining the rest of my life. If you feel that way, breathe easy and understand that people go through major changes all the time, mostly because they had no idea what they were really getting into. Here are some tips that I did not know coming into college that will help you choose a major you’ll feel more comfortable with, and some techniques to changing your major that will make it feel easier and not like you are adding on years to your stay in college.

First off, pick a major that caters to your interests, passions, and strong suites. This will give you more motivation in researching the major, the professors who teach in the major, and the opportunities you’ll receive during and after your college degree with your selected education path. Every school has stronger or weaker colleges of business, social sciences, physical sciences, etc. If your heart lies with science, go with a school that offers more opportunities in that field.

When you visit the campus, make sure to talk to people that deal directly with your possible major. Visit the clubs associated with the major, so you can talk to students and ask them about the experiences they’ve had over their past few years and how they feel about it. Ask yourself if you relate to the type of individuals that end up in that field. Talk to advisors specifically dedicated to the subject. This will give you insight into what type of people are going down your desired path, what type of professors and courses you’ll be dealing with, and it will give you a broader perspective of the experiences you will encounter during your time in college.

If you still feel unsure, or what to leave yourself options later down the line, mainly register for classes that will apply towards general education. This way, if you decide a year or so in that you want to change majors or head down a different path, you never really wasted any time in getting your degree. When I entered college as a biology major, I mainly took general education courses. I ended up deciding two years into my major to switch to psychology, and even though the course paths were very different, I had already completed much of my general education and still had biology classes that went into a minor.

Do not stress if you are not 110% sure about what you want to do with the rest of your life. Even if you do feel that sure, you most likely aren’t. Take it slow your first year or two in college, keep your eyes and ears open , and plan accordingly to make any last minute changes.

When students decide on their major, a lot of the time they disregard thinking about a minor. Majors are required to be declared when you are studying for your bachelors at a university but minors are often not a requirement to obtain. For those of you who don’t know the difference between a major and a minor, here is a simple breakdown according to University Language Services (ULS):

“Your college major is the primary subject you want to study and the field in which you want to find a job after graduation.

While your college major is your primary field of study, your college minor is a secondary field that is often (but not always!) related to your major.”

Choosing a minor related to your major

The first option you having when deciding on a minor, is picking one that compliments your major. Often time, courses that are required to be taken for your major intertwine with classes required for a related minor. This makes achieving your choice of major and minor simpler because classes will double credit for both. When the two are related, it shows that you are specialized in your field of study and it adds more on top of the experience you receive while studying. An example of having related major and minor would be a student studying communications with a minor in journalism.

Choosing an unrelated minor

Via cc: Melyviz

The next option would be to select a minor that isn’t related to your major at all. Students usually do this for a personal balance or to fulfill other needs. There can be great benefits when your minor is far from similar to your major. It can show future employers that you are well rounded and it is a great way to show your passion. For example, a student could be majoring in engineering because they are talented with numbers and would like to hold a career in that field. But because they have a passion for painting, they can minor in art history.

Overall, students should seize the opportunity to receive a minor because it could possibly be the key factor to differentiate you between another person trying to get the same job post graduation. Check with your university to see what minors are available for you today!

A friend of mine recently started going to a large four-year university, after having attended our local community college. While at the community college, she refused to join Facebook. It only took three weeks to go by at the university and suddenly she was an active Facebook user, like so many others I know.

Social networking sites, specifically Facebook, LinkedIn and MySpace are now a part of the culture at American Universities. Their names have become verbs. You can now “facebook” someone, as easily as you can call someone. Their impact on a student’s social life can be helpful, but also devastating. Fights can start over a message posted online or an argument can become inflamed and continue through these mediums.

College users often are so wrapped up in their own Facebook worlds that they forget about the bigger picture. An occasional photo of you and your friends having a beer at the local bar shouldn’t devastate your bright and shining future. Picture after picture of standing next to a beer keg and all your drunk buddies, just might. With the downturn of the world economy, the job market has become even more competitive.

So how do you keep that embarrassing picture from being viewed by potential employers? Simple, don’t post it. Don’t put things on Facebook that you aren’t willing to share with a complete stranger. Security measures are nice, but they aren’t fool proof, and people aren’t perfect. If you want to share the picture of you and your friends drinking a whole keg, then email them the pictures. Don’t post them to a website millions of people can access.

cc license, abbyladybug

// ]]>

Also, remember to self-check your online image. Go to your favorite search engine, type your name in and see what comes up. I assure you, that any computer savvy employer will do the same. Make sure that a simple internet search doesn’t turn up that picture you had forgotten about with your friends goofing off. Knowing your online reputation is comparable to knowing what your former employers will say about you.

Lastly, and perhaps the easiest thing to do is not do stupid things in the first place. In college, my favorite thing to do Monday morning was to pick up a copy of the school newspaper and read the police blotter. This is a log of select police incidents, which happened over the weekend. I was told by my boss on the first day of my job that if I was ever in the blotter, I would no longer have a job. School officials do check things like this and it isn’t hard for a company to find the newspaper of your school and search for your name.

These warnings are not meant to make you paranoid. I enjoy using social media and the web as much as anyone. I love spending time on Facebook and posting pictures of my friends. The internet can be an amazing social tool, but remember to keep your future in mind when sharing information. What you post on the net can be seen by anyone including that potential future employer.
