Best Value Colleges and Universities in the United States

6 February 2009 3,759 views 8 Comments

Debt, debt, debt, student loans, lower paying jobs for college grads, spiraling tuition costs, and excessive cost of books and campus life mean that many students are graduating already buried under debt.  Its time for students to make better informed financial decisions about their education. Whether its choosing to go to an In-state college, community college for a year or two as a bridge to a 4-year institution, or fighting harder for a full or partial scholarship there are some colleges and universities out there that are still a fantastic value.

We have rated and chosen 5 universities from 3 different admissions categories, Most Selective, More Selective, and Selective. We would love to hear your comments and suggestions for other readers.  You may notice most of the schools are Public Universities, as we reviewed various institutions the difficulty in choosing a private university with a better value especially in the More Selective and Selective categories became overwhelmingly difficult.  Do you agree or disagree with this list? Small state run colleges such as the 16 or so here in Pennsylvania give huge value for the dollar. Especially if you are in state you can get a very valuable education for the cost of about one year at some of the schools listed here.

This is an excellent list and one that many would-be university students should have access to.

It is rather sad that a lot of students leave school with a big debt and you know that often than not, that just spirals downwards from thereon. Being drowned in debt is one of the most important things that many adults want to get out of and yet students start with it. It’s not a very good value to have.

The schools on this list are very good and will give them the education they want. I’m definitely going to pass this one on.

Thank you, very detailed and useful list.

Other than California, I noticed a conspicuous absence of western schools. Do you perhaps have one or two other recommendations west of the Rockies, maybe even in the Northwest?

As a Canadian, I was trying to compare the rates listed above, with rates in Ontario.
To my surprise, the rates here are on par with your list.

But, the only downside to this is the huge debt, which students are drowned into
as they move on in life.

Thanks for Quite a detailed list.
