I am a muslim female. I went to US and got my master degree there. It was a great experience for me and I consider the years I spent in US to be the best in my life. People there are great. They are very kind, helpful, approachable and the most important that they respect “being different” in terms of your belief, your look, they way you dress or eat. I’ve learned many things from them and hope I can go back to finish my PhD….

The beauty of American society is that nothing is forced upon others. I came to the USA as a student and had no problem with mixed gender gatherings or events where alcohol was available. People are kind and respectful of others’ social and dietary preferences. All one has to do is politely say that I do not drink (or consume pork/meat). Civility, decency and family values are normal traits in this society as they are in many others.

In answer to the question Douglas poses, many colleges now have Muslim organizations on campus where students can find others who share their beliefs on male-female relationships, alcohol, and other issues. In addition, many non-Muslim students are far more conservative about such issues than you might think.
