Okay guys, I’ve been sorting through student registrations for our upcoming Fall US Educational Group fairs in the Middle East – and I just want to say, some of you have CRAZY email addresses.

Can I just recommend one quick thing that will help improve the first impression you give the admissions counselor reading your application? Especially if you are a graduate student applying for a Masters or PhD program.

cc license, garrettc

Sign up for a new email address

All of you. Seriously. You can’t submit your application to a professional program with an unprofessional email address like shakiralover@hotmail.com or ilovegirls@hotmail.com – just go to Gmail and sign up for a new email address. Preferably just your name, like ahmedghamdi@gmail.com

Why Gmail? Well because they pay me millions of dollars to endorse them. Just kidding, it’s because you can easily FORWARD all the emails you receive there to the email address you check most. That means you will never miss an important email if you don’t check your new account every day. Pretty awesome, right?

Just like you would be underwhelmed if you went to a college fair and met a University representative in a ratty t-shirt, jeans and a shibshib, think of the first impression the admissions officer is getting of you. So instead of applying online and emailing the admissions office from your personal email address, yalla, sign up for a nice shiny new email address that will make you look well dressed.

I promise you the admissions officers will appreciate it. Its one of the things they mention as a “never do” when talking about filling out applications.

So now that you signed up for the new email address, go ahead and register for the Fall fair in your city or register to get more information from colleges and universities if we aren’t coming close enough this time.

See you at the fair!

We hope you are planning to attend one of the Al Jamiat US University fairs this fall. Here are a few tips to remember that will help you get the most out of the experience. To see the list of city stops on the 2009 fall tour visit here.

Tip One: Pre-Register

By filling out your registration form online here before the fair you will save time and avoid a line when you arrive. If you are registering for Beirut, Amman or Aqaba you will receive a barcode to use during the fair. All you need to do is have the universities scan your code and they instantly have your information. It is a simple and easy process.

Tip Two: Do your Homework

Before coming to the fair take a look at the list of universities attending. Learn more about the schools you are interested in and see what programs they offer. You will not have time to talk to everyone at the fair so pick your priority schools you definitely want to meet. There are short bios of each school available online here.

Tip Three: Be Prepared to Answer Questions

Have you thought about what you want to study? Universities may ask in what programs you are interested in, your current year in school and average test scores or grades. It is helpful to have these answers ready for conversation. The representatives will be better able to answer your questions knowing more information about you.

Tip Four: Be Prepared to Ask Questions

It is also a good idea to prepare some of your own questions. What do you want to know about a university’s admissions process, academics or social life on-campus? These university representatives are here to answer your questions. They want you to learn as much as possible about their school. There are no stupid questions – so please ask away.

Tip Five: Pre-Register!

Wait, did we already mention this? You must be registered to enter the fair so there is no reason not to register before you show up. Save yourself the hassle and time by skipping the long line. Here is the registration link one more time in case you missed it.

The book 1984 was written by George Orwell back in the 1920s. While it is mainly a book about Orwell’s vision of the future, it also offers those who study language an important lesson. The main character, Winston, must understand why two plus two is five. His teacher explains that it is simple, because the party said it was. Four is simply a label, and if the party changes the label, then two plus two is five.

While the U.S. has not been overtaken by the oppressive government Orwell foresaw, he did teach his readers that words are simply labels. What I, as a native English speaker think of as my head, my Swiss-German exchange student thinks of as my Kopf. My Kopf doesn’t change function or shape, just because I call it a head. Words are simply labels we put on the world around us. A foreign language, like German in my case, is simply another set of labels.

So it makes sense, when learning a foreign language, to start thinking with the new set of labels as soon as possible. This isn’t a concept I came up with all by myself, major language learning companies teach it in their courses. Instead of vocabulary lists, with words in the native language on one side, and the foreign language on the other. They use pictures, pictograms, and symbols to demonstrate a words meaning. They simply change the label.

Like when you were little, and learning how to read and write in your native language, the mind starts to relearn labels. The mind starts associating the word Kopf with the same objects as head. Slowly, as the vocabulary grows, or perhaps simply as it becomes easier, thought in a foreign language occurs. It’s nothing that can be forced, but slowly my Kopf is no longer translated to head. The word Kopf is seen and without translation, it is understood. As simply as if the word head had been said, Kopf is thought and said.

This is not a process that can be rushed, or forced. Your mind will think in the foreign language, when it feels ready. All that you can do (at least consciously) is let it happen. It’s a strange feeling, but when it becomes natural, a certain sense of pride washes over you.

A strange thing starts to happen, as foreign language skills begin to improve. Native language skills start to disintegrate. This is especially a problem, when exposed to a foreign language for a long period of time. Sometimes this is in the form of simply thinking and saying Kopf instead of head, in the middle of an English conversation. Sometimes it’s in the form of an English sentence, with German grammar structure. Sometimes, it’s simply speaking in one language, when you meant to use the other.

Learning a foreign language is a process, that is sped up only by spending time surrounded by that language. Perhaps it will only take a week, to begin thinking and functioning in English, perhaps it will take a little longer. Getting to this point in your language skills, is part of the experience of living abroad, and is a skill that will make life abroad much easier.

Degree Offerings: Associate, Bachelor’s, Master’s, Doctoral, First Professional

Greetings! Today, I would like to invite you along with me to the University of Cincinnati, a public institution located in Cincinnati, Ohio. UC enrolls just a bit under 21,000 undergraduates annually, with 83.3% of them coming from Ohio and the remaining percentage from across the US and around the world.

Getting to the International Students Website

From the main page, click on the Future Students link located at the top navigation bar; from here, find the heading called “Seeking Admission?” and click on International, Undergraduate. This link will take you to a website devoted to helping international students learn a bit more about UC, and also as a resource when applying to the university. Simple enough? I think so!

University of Cincinnati

The Campus

UC’s campus is a mixture of the old and new. It’s hard to pinpoint the architectural style of the entire campus because there is such a vast array. There is, as I have grown to expect, the old red bricked academic buildings floating around, but there are also very modern looking buildings and many unique sculptures. I don’t know if you can really say that there is a singular theme that unites the entire campus.

With that being said, do not misunderstand and believe that UC looks disjointed. On the contrary, everything seems to flow together to make one very interesting and lovely campus. Check out the photos below to see what I mean!

Residential Living

As far as residential living goes, all of the residence halls on campus are co-ed and also substance free. All of the rooms (whether it is community-styled or suite-styled) come equipped with Cable-TV, Internet, a microfridge (microwave and refrigerator), and completely air-conditioned. There are about 8 halls on campus at UC, and all freshmen are required to live in these halls during their freshmen year. One of the best things about UC’s residence halls is the fact that they never fully close — yes, even during winter breaks! — a particularly convenient option for international students who cannot go home during breaks.

Residence Hall

In terms of themed housing, UC’s Stratford Heights is home to the “special housing” (Learning Communities) that we are currently talking about. The one that carries importance for our interest is the Valentine House, otherwise known as the foreign language house.

Student Life and Activities

Like any other college camps, UC is flooded with a wide array of student organizations. With over 300 student clubs, 11 sororities and 21 fraternities, I think it’s safe to say that it’s hard to be bored unless you truly put some effort into it. According to a current UC student, although UC is only about 4% Greek, the Greek influence still plays a central role in the life of the student body. The leadership positions are usually held by members of the Greek community, and they usually tend to secure spots within UC’s Homecoming Court during Homecoming Weekend.

And, of course, what college review would be complete without a comment on the social life of the typical UC student. Although UC’s dorms are supposedly substance-free, UC as a whole is a wet campus. There are 2 bars that students (who are of age) can go to should they feel the desire to just stay on campus. As far as party life goes, since the dorms are substance-free, most of the parties will occur off-campus in fraternity houses or just your typical house party. The typical UC student does tend to party a lot, but if you’re not into that lifestyle, don’t be afraid. Cincinnati still has a lot to offer its many residents and college students in museums, restaurants, and other venues.

I know U - C it ...

International Students at UC

According to University statistics, UC has about 10% international students and a good assortment of resources available to them. Like most universities, UC has a special division designed to handle the needs of international students. UC’s International Student Services is this division of the University, a center that sponsors a special orientation for all first year international students. This orientation includes a tour of Cincinnati (the city and the campus), a run to the grocery stores for basic essentials, and also an airport pick up.

Along with this special orientation (a common feature at most universities), UC is also affiliated with ELS, a privately owned company housed at UC that allows for prospective UC international students to come early, teach said students intensive language, and offer them a contingent letter of admittance to UC (assuming they have met other Admissions criteria). According to a counselor within the Admissions office, this program is quite popular and incredibly helpful (especially among Saudi students).

In Conclusion …

Before I left UC, I asked the Admissions counselor what it was about UC that would draw international students to the university. According to her, the reason why UC attracts a respectable amount of international students is because of the post-graduation options available for undergraduates. She was speaking of UC’s co-op program and its ability to match up students with potential employers – relationships that could transform a typical co-op into possible employment after graduation. The reason why co-ops are so popular and successful at UC is because it actually started the co-op program. As you may know, this program was found to be so effective that other universities have also made it into their own curriculum. At UC, co-ops are required for Design, Engineering, and Science majors.

All in all, I think that UC is a good option for those who want to go to a big and public university without feeling too engulfed by the size. With its many resources, UC has a lot to offer its students, and I hope you will consider it as a possible option in your college list. For more information about my tour, please read on.
Located: Gambier, OH

Greetings! Today, I would like to invite you along with me to Kenyon College, a small liberal arts college located in Gambier, Ohio. Kenyon enrolls about 1,600 undergraduates each year with the majority of its students coming from the US (the Mid-Atlantic having the most students enrolling) and abo0ut 5.3% from around the world.

Getting to the International Student Section

From the main page, click on the “Admission & Financial Aid” link and then “Apply to Kenyon.” From here, you will be lead to a page that will guide you through the steps of applying for admission to Kenyon College. In order to get to International Student Admission, click on the “International Students” link located on the left hand side of the page under the heading “Apply to Kenyon.” This link will lead you to a page that will describe the requirements you will need to meet before you can apply to Kenyon College.

Old Kenyon

The Campus

I have to be honest and say that I expected Kenyon’s college to be much more than it turned out to be. Based on the pamphlets and literature about Kenyon, I had (unrealistically) high hopes for Kenyon – hopes that fell a little short when I got there. Kenyon sells itself very well, which is not surprising since it is known to be a “writer’s college” – and honestly, what should I have expected from an institution that publishes the critically acclaimed Kenyon Review?

Don’t misunderstand; Kenyon is still a very lovely place. It is very in-tuned with its natural surroundings (lots of trees and open spaces), and geared towards providing a sanctuary upon a hill. I guess if I had to describe Kenyon in one word, it would have to be “scenic” – if you are an outdoorsy person, I think it is safe to say that you will love Kenyon. If you are a lover of big cities, and thrive on a fast paced living environment, you might want to look elsewhere.

Residence Hall

Student Living

Most students choose to live on-campus at Kenyon all of their four years. Living “off-campus” and living “on-campus” is basically the same thing when it comes to Kenyon since Gambier exists for the College. The College itself is dispersed throughout the city of Gambier, so much so that they seem almost synonymous with one another.

As for residential living, Kenyon is divided up into a northern end and a southern end. According to a current Kenyon student, the North end of campus houses most of the first-year students, and then the more “studious” Kenyonites. The South end of campus, on the other hand, is home to Old Kenyon and the fraternity and sorority hall.

After the first year, students can choose to move out of the traditional residence halls into on-campus apartments, suites, and also themed housing. These “cultural spaces” (as referred to in the Kenyon ViewBook) can range from the Showden Multicultural Center, the Brow Family Environmental Center, to the Unity Hall (for LGBT students).

Scenic Kenyon

Student Activities

Kenyon students are very well rounded people, and tend to take advantage of the 100+ student organizations offered at the College. Since most of them are incredibly brilliant, they do spend a good portion of their time studying, but other than academic pursuits, Kenyon students are also big fans of the great outdoors. Kenyon’s campus has a lot of walking trails, a river for kayaking, and wide-open spaces for recreational activities. Students are very active, and the KAC (work out facility) is usually quite packed.

As far as the party scene goes, there are, of course, parties at Kenyon. However, Kenyon is more of a “hang out” college than one whose Greek life runs the social scene. Although Kenyon does have fraternities and sororities, (around 20% of the population) its parties are not exclusive like other universities; Greek parties are open to everyone. The typical Kenyon social life usually includes experiencing the local music scene, going to the movies and plays, the occasional themed party, and taking advantage of the great outdoors.

The International Student @ Kenyon College

According to a friend who currently goes to Kenyon, international students usually make up a good portion of the multicultural student population. Kenyon does a better job recruiting internationally than domestically, so most of the ethnic minority students come from overseas rather than the States. Unlike some Colleges, however, the international students at Kenyon aren’t particularly “cliquey” and tend to mix in very well with the rest of the student population. In order to help its international students adjust to life at Kenyon, the administration does its best to set up host-families for its students, a special orientation specifically for international students, and other various resources. Kenyon also has an International Students Association at Kenyon. An organization whose goal is to “inform and enliven the College community by sponsoring dances, film festivals, international dinners, and performances.”

Kenyon College

In Conclusion …

Kenyon is a very special place – but it is also out in the middle of nowhere; the drive up to Kenyon was particularly interesting because I thought I was going to get lost! The drive up to Kenyon had a lot of narrow roads, and it had been quite a long while since I had been in rural Ohio (Gambier is very close to an Amish settlement).

Yes, Kenyon is a bit small and a bit isolated, but it is definitely filled with the best and brightest. Some of these students (and professors!) could have gone to Ivy Leagues but didn’t. You have to wonder why this is, given how sought-after and revered the Ivies are within academic circles.

I must admit that I had to step back and ponder the question myself. Why would they choose Kenyon? After a bit of thinking and reevaluating, I think one of the reasons is because Kenyon is a very genuine and supportive community. It seems like Kenyonites are not particularly concerned with labels; rather, they choose to help one another engage in what you should go to college for – to learn as much about the world as you can, to figure out how you can contribute to it, and to leave with the confidence to start answering the “big questions” you asked while in school. I invite you to learn more about this very curious and very special sanctuary on the hill.
